As soon as the warm summer night air began to leave us, I got excited for one of my favorite times of the year – the changing of the bedding from summer to winter. Ah! Nothing gets me more excited than breaking out my down comforter and deciding how to dress the bed! I’m a little crazy about bedding – super soft sheets, a fluffy, warm and cozy down comforter, and a beautiful duvet set. Ah! Can you feel it?
This year, I knew in advance that I wanted to change a few things up in my room before this special occasion of mine. Simple, but with just some minor tweaks, it was like I was giving my comfy, cotton sanctuary a little face lift. It was inexpensive and easy, yet so rewarding. Making my bed never felt so good! This may sound a little coo coo, but if my bed is made, I could care less if there are toys laying around on the floor, or if there are laundry baskets filled with cleaned clothes who need a folding. My nicely made bed can make my room seem clean! Can you relate?
I made three simple changes. They were simple in that they didn’t take much time or money to do. However, I couldn’t seem to find exactly what I was looking for at first, but with a little hunting it all came together nicely. At least I think so.
Here was my plan:
1.) Change my bedskirt from tailored to ruffled. I always use a white bedskirt because at the base of all my bedding is white. It seems to be the most versitle color and since I like to change my duvets out, I have found that white goes well with everything. I’m not even certain why I had a tailored skirt to begin with because that look is just not me. I’m more traditional and ruffled is little more shabby chic and screams feminity to me and I love that when it comes to bedding. You can have a black or navy colored duvet on your bed to incorporate your husband, but if you have a ruffled skirt, it’s still femine! And let’s be honest, ladies, you know you’re the one that’s dressing that bed. Finding this was quite the challenge because for some reason no one sells King bedskirts. Cal King, yes, but not King. So, thank goodness for the internet. Target has the Simply Shabby Chic collection which is inexpensive, but still decent quality. I couldn’t find the size in the store, but I went online and found it there. You gotta love the internet and UPS!
AFTER WITH RUFFLED BEDSKIRT
Okay, so I practically broke my back the day I did this little face lift. Yes, I removed the old skirt and added the new one by myself. I’m the kind of girl that waits for no one. I want it done, I do it! With a little scooting and pushing, I got that sucker on all by my lonesome! It’s no wonder why I’m seeing a chiropractor!
2.) Change up my throw pillows. I wanted to add some and change the layout. I had been doing the same thing on my bed for some time, but there was a look that I just loved. This was a super duper simple change because all I did was move two recently purchased IKEA pillow covers from my guest room to my bedroom. I had down inserts in them, but they were too small for the covers and I had some slightly larger down inserts in the closet from old pillows that I had just removed from my couch. They fit just perfect and helped me create the look I was going for. This is the easiest look to achieve. And all you really need to do is tap into the resources you might already have laying around.
BY USING LOTS OF DIFFERENT PILLOWS, YOU CREATE TEXTURE AND VARIETY.
3.) Purchase a slipcover for a Club chair that we inherited from my husband’s grandmother. The chair was stained, but still had great structure. It fit perfect in this little sitting area in my room. My mother in-law offered to have it recovered for us as a gift, but I had dreams of making a slipcover for it. Stop, that was a mistake! There was no way I was ever making a nicely tailored slipcover for that chair! Dreaming, big time! I had purchased an e-manual on how to make one, and it was huge no go. I can sew, but to be honest, I’m no tailor. Four straight edges, is about the extent of my sewing. I’m not sure if I was feeling overly confident that day or maybe my sewing machine was being nice to me, but that was the biggest waste of money. Moving on! Instead, I decided to buy a slipcover! And boy, did it take a while to figure out where to get one. Let’s just say, finding a cover for that chair was pretty impossible. Online was the only route to go for this, unless you have one custom made. So, I just opted to get a white twill loose cover from Pottery Barn. What I love about this cover is you can make it look however you’d like. Pottery Barn shows pictures in the catalog of the cover just draped over a couch, but I tucked and pleated mine to make a more femine look and one that would compliment my new ruffled bedskirt.
After getting this bed all set up, I couldn’t help but spend the rest of my day dreaming of getting into it that night. Ah, the best feeling in the world is a nicely made bed with crisp clean sheets on it. And laying down at the end of a long day is the perfect medicine for mama’s broken back. That day happened to be a Saturday and my husband was having movie night in my bed with the girls. Little did I know that they had a popcorn party in it too. Awe, man! There went that dream!
