Over the holidays my husband and I took the kids to Disneyland. We went with some long time friends who are like family to us and whose son is almost the exact same age as our son – to say we had a blast would be an understatement. The weather was cold (well, cold for Southern California) and rainy and not what most people would call perfect, but it was perfect for us – the wet dreary weather drove a lot of people away, which meant shorter lines and more rides for us! Wohoo!
There is so much to do and see at Disneyland that we decided to make a trip of it and stayed overnight. We stayed at a nearby DoubleTree and couldn’t have been happier. The hotel was located about a mile from the park, which meant we avoided the expensive hotels on the Disneyland property and we could walk each day to save money on parking. The rooms were clean, spacious, the restaurant on site had great food, and the staff was more than accommodating – what more could you ask for? Except maybe more time there? Even after two days at the park, and very little crowds, we still felt we did not see and do everything there is to do!

Now you may be wondering what Disneyland has to do home decor. Well, I’m sharing this with you because we enjoyed ourselves so much we decided to incorporate a little bit of our trip into our home. No, there aren’t any new Mickey or Minnie Mouse decorations in the house, but instead a newly painted front door inspired by a color seen at Disneyland.
Our front door was in good shape, but it needed an update. We weren’t digging the orange undertones of the stain applied in the early ’80’s and had decided long ago to paint it, but could never decide on a color so the project was on standby. I admit, part of me felt REALLY badly about painting a perfectly good piece of wood, but the thought of stripping, sanding, and re-staining the door sounded more dreary than the weather we encountered while at Disneyland. (I thought about using Polyshades, but the finish on the door wasn’t compatible.)
Here is what the door looked like BEFORE:
While in the New Orleans area of Disneyland, I was inspired by all of the vibrant blue details and decided it was a great color for the front door.
After we got home I started looking at paint swatches, narrowed down the colors to two, and then let my husband pick the winner. He decided on Blue Gasp by Benjamin Moore. It isn’t an exact match to the Disneyland blue I was inspired by, since it has some more obvious purple undertones, but it was close enough. Normally I test the color using paint samples, but this time I just went for it. I mean what’s not to love about a color described Benjamin Moore as:
“Dark and dramatic, this concentrated bluish-purple shade exudes romance, conjuring daydreams of amorous adventures at sea.”
I started by lightly sanding the door and deglossing it with TSP. Then I primed it using some leftover primer tinted grey from my media cabinet project.
I used my Graco Truecoat II Plus to speed up the job and eliminate brush strokes.
Next, I painted it and after it was dry I slightly distressed the edges and added some green details by glazing it.
Here is the AFTER:
Now every time I see our front door, I am reminded of our wonderful Disneyland trip – not a bad thing to think about each day, Disneyland really is “The Happiest Place On Earth”.
